Dark & Dangerous is the fifth album from Savage Master, a band at the vanguard of female-fronted traditional heavy metal. I've had my issues with past Savage Master releases, from unfocused vocals to pedestrian songwriting, but a lot of that has been tightened up on Dark & Dangerous. The '80s vibe is strong on cuts like "Warrior's Call", which evokes Savatage's guitar work, and "Never Ending Fire" and "The Edge of Evil," which have a more accessible style but are still heavy. "Screams from the Cellar" is another memorable track due to the vocals, which are from the Crystal Viper school. I wish the guitars had more bite, as some of the riffs here are excellent but don't have enough weight behind them. There's nothing I actively dislike about Dark & Dangerous and I enjoy it plenty while it is on, but there are bands that do this style better. If you enjoy Chastain, Tower, Shadowland, Midnight Dice, etc. Savage Master should have a place in your rotation and Dark & Dangerous is a great place to start. |
