For any fan that can't get enough of Haunting the Chapel/Hell Awaits-era Slayer, I give you Canada's Sacrifice and their debut album, Torment in Fire. Originally released in 1986, this album (along with Sacrifice's next two) got the reissue treatment from High Roller Records in 2022. This album is full of pedal-to-the-metal thrash sure to have your neck aching in very short order. The vocals are a wild scream while the solos sound like they were wrung from the guitars by way of strangling them. There are a few breakdowns here and there, but in general Torment in Fire is a showcase of speed. The songwriting is notable only for how often I thought to myself, "that sounds like Slayer" as I was listening but, hey, there are far worse musicians to pay homage to than Hanneman, King, Araya & Lombardo circa 1986, and Sacrifice certainly hit that nail right on the head. If you love '80s thrash, especially when the wave was cresting in '86, and don't already own this album, what are you waiting for? It isn't original but it thrashes hard, loud, and fast. Additional Information 2022 reissue on High Roller Records reviewed. |
