This is one of two raw recordings by a fan in November 1985 at the Starwood Club in Toronto, the other being Slaughter playing the day after Sacrifice. Just like the Slaughter recording, this is really raw and unedited, so it’s pretty much like you were there with all the quirks of a live performance and craziness in the attendance. I found the Slaughter show a little more fun, but Slaughter have more of a tendency to goof off between songs so it’s not the same dynamic when interacting with the crowd. That said, this presents Sacrifice at their rawest and those early songs by the band sound even heavier and more menacing than their studio recordings, though of course sometimes it gets a little chaotic and it’s hard to make out some stuff (pretty sure the paint peeled off the walls that night!) For something recorded with a microphone hooked up to a Walkman nearly 40 years ago, this is pretty fucking awesome. Like the Slaughter album, this is not really essential, but fans will want to take a listen. Note:The original version of this review mentioned two repeated tracks (alternative versions). I have been informed that this was a mistake in the promo package and there are no repeated tracks on the released version of the album. This makes the experience better and the rating went up a bit as a result. ;) |
