This is the debut album from Hierophany, a project that appears to rise from the ashes of the seasoned Mexican black/death metal band Black Hate. I'm not familiar with their previous work, but judging from what's presented here, it might be worth checking out.

Hierophany primarily operate in the murky realms of atmospheric black metal in the vein of Akhlys, though traces of Deathspell Omega, Batushka, Behemoth, and Mayhem surface throughout. The focus is squarely on a foreboding and ominous atmosphere, where dense, wall-of-sound guitars laced with slightly discordant melodies create an oppressive sonic landscape. This approach works particularly well on tracks like "Ars Moriendi" and "Beyond the Sacred," where the suffocating instrumentation is matched by the theatrical, commanding roar of B.G. Ikanunna, making the whole experience feel even more unsettling.

While the album is captivating in its own twisted way, the standout for me is "Vigilae Mortuorum," where the band injects some seriously punishing hooks, proving they can do more than simply overwhelm and terrify. On the downside, the nearly nine-minute ambient piece, "Oficio De Tinieblas," doesn't add much beyond stretching things out, and ends up being skippable. Likewise, the closing title track doesn't quite reach the same heights as the preceding songs, slipping into slightly more predictable territory.

Even so, this is a very strong debut under the Hierophany name and one that should turn a few heads in the black metal underground. Recommended.
