I don't review singles often (Black Lion Records calls this an EP, but in my world of physical releases, two songs equal a single), but when I saw that Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's Behölder not only wrote a song based on a Conan story but also covered Savatage's "The Dungeons are Calling," how could I not check it out? "Tower of the Broken God" is based on the Robert E. Howard story "Tower of the Elephant" and is a solid epic/doom track that doesn't really bowl you over but thunders along with a solid riff and some good vocal lines. Behölder take on the tall task of covering "The Dungeons are Calling" and do an admirable job, but since no one will ever equal (to say nothing of surpass) Jon Oliva's unique vocal performance or Criss Oliva's savage riffing, I can't say it is mandatory. Do you really need a two song "EP" with a couple of good but shy of great songs, at least one of which is likely to be on Behölder's next album? That's your call, but that artwork IS pretty awesome.
