This band going by the name Behölder was formed in 2021 by former Power Theory guitarist Carlos Alvarez, who has enlisted musicians from bands like Judicator and Chaos Frame. Behölder's purpose is to combine Alvarez's love of doom metal and Dungeons & Dragons (hence the name of the band, for those who know). The music on their debut album, In the Temple of the Tyrant, is a solid collection of beefy riffs and the soaring, Robert Lowe-meets-Jon Oliva vocals of John Yelland who belts out D&D-inspired lyrics over the rolling guitars and drums. "Draconian," with its epic doom atmosphere, and "For Those Who Fell," with its somber, emotive vocals (reminding me of "I Am a Viking" from Yngwie Malmsteen in places) are standouts, but there aren't any songs on the album that I don't like. It isn't at the level of Candlemass's Death Magic Doom or songs like Savatage's "Hall of the Mountain King," but for an album that came out of nowhere, it has been an extremely pleasant surprise from a band I will be watching very closely, hoping for more quality epic doom metal.
