This is somewhat of a forgotten gem within Aborted's large discography. This is their debut full-length album from 1999. I love how stripped down and raw this album is. You've got most of, if not all of the elements that have always made up a good Aborted record on here, but just less polished than what you hear from them today. It's a kick ass mixture of old school death metal riffing, technical and fast, as well as slow and prodding. The catchiness is there too. The drums are right in the pocket; whether it's on the more thrash sections, the pounding breakdowns or the out-and-out blasting chaos. Sven's vocals may be my favorite performance on any record they've done. He has killer gutturals, but the high screams on this one are just a little bit more disgusting compared to subsequent releases, in my opinion. I love the vibe that this band gives off, especially on this early shit. The horror movie clips at the beginning or end of the songs really gives off a cool feel that's a bit different than say a band like Mortician, who really rely on that stuff. The clips are short enough that they don't take away from the music. There's so much killer shit on this album; I wish the album was easier to come by these days. A good reissue on CD and vinyl is definitely way long overdue. The Purity of Perversion is the beginning of a trilogy of full-length albums by Aborted that are pretty much second to none. This debut, along with follow-ups Engineering the Dead and Goremageddon (The Saw and the Carnage Done) are among the best death metal to be released in the last 25 years from anywhere in the world.
