It's been four years since Damage SFP released their well-received self-titled debut, and with everything that's been going on since then, I certainly don't blame them for the time taken to get Punished by the System out the door, especially when it's this good. They still have their roots firmly planted in the thrash camp, but they've actually expanded their sound a good bit by incorporating more punk and rock influences to their sound in a manner not too far from what Sentenced did with Down, all while displaying more mature and varied songwriting. You still get more standard thrashers like the catchy "Betrayal in Your Eyes" and the vicious "Face Your Demons," but they're balanced out with the rocking one-two punch of "The Greedy and Selfish" and "Fallen Star," punky numbers like the title track and a strong cover of Motörhead's "Iron Fist," and even melancholic, Sentenced-esque power ballad with closer "Unfreeze Me," which is not the kind of song I would expect them to write. Overall, this is just a damn good sophomore release that proves the band isn't just a one-trick pony while also staying true to their roots. Recommended.
