Sibireal are a Russian 4-piece that’s been around in one form or another since 2008, adopting their current name in 2013 and releasing an EP in 2017 before getting to their full-length debut, Blood Color Sky, in 2020. This is an odd album that starts with a Black Metal base and then adds Thrash, Trad, and even some Folk in an attempt to make a unique sound. Sadly, none of the pieces really come together in a way that makes sense, leaving for a release that’s mostly chaotic and directionless as it tries to do everything at once without giving any of it enough room to develop into something coherent. The band certainly has the chops to make great music, as is evident with the killer riffs and eerie atmosphere of "Symbols" and a kinetic cover of Fatal Energy’s "Paradoxes of Time," but they really need to sit down and figure out what exactly they’re trying to do. They also need to stick with the harsh vocals and ditch the cleans entirely, as they are absolutely awful and drag down the already messy proceedings, going as far as nearly ruining the aforementioned cover. There’s promise here, but while Blood Color Sky is a novel album, it’s not a particularly strong one for all that. |
