By now, Black and Death Metal bands incorporating Egyptian/Sumerian themes and sounds is practically a subgenre of its own, and all that remains is to determine if they have done it well or not. Akhenaten are definitely doing it well, incorporating a lot of atmospheric/ambient sounds, but also not forgetting that this is a metal album. Their slightly blackened Death Metal sound is a bit technical and borrows a few sounds from industrial bands as well, but overall it just hammers out some massively enjoyable music. This is violent enough to hit the spot, while also having enough atmospheric and Middle Eastern sounds to create a genuine mood and keep the thematic thread from being just window-dressing. Instead, Akhenaten come across as serious and intense, and it results in a really good album. |
