Man, it has been like 20 years since I heard Vhäldemar, way back on their second album I Made My Own Hell, and so I was pleased for the chance to see what they were up to. It looks like they are up to pretty much exactly what they used to do, without anything changed at all. In the old days, this band stood out because they were harder-edged than a lot of other Power Metal bands, but they were never really a Power Metal band and they have stopped trying to be, being much more in the vein of Accept, Paragon, Wizard or Stormwarrior with fast-flying riffs, pummeling speed, and rough-but-tuneful vocals. Pedro Monge is still a hell of a shredder, and his volleying riffs and leads are still a highlight of the music. The songwriting is energetic but highly conventional, and you will almost swear you have heard these tunes before, but they are still a good time.
