It was quite the surprise when I realized Moonspell will soon be celebrating their 30th year (FUCK, I'm old!). I was there from the beginning when they were flirting a bit with Black Metal. Then the gradual transformation to (arguably) the best Gothic Metal band on the planet. I would not say every release has been incredible, but they have all been interesting. More often than not they set a new benchmark when it comes to the Gothic Metal genre. This is where Hermitage comes in. This IS the perfect representation of what this genre is but, more than that, it sets a new standard for other bands to try and reach.

The best way to really enjoy this album is on a nice home system or a high-quality set of headphones. To really get the full feel of this album you should give it your full attention. I am not saying it can't be enjoyed any other way but when you give it your full attention you are definitely rewarded. The subtle atmosphere changes with instruments moving in and out, especially in songs like "Entitlement" and "Solitarian" which are just absolutely beautiful. The songwriting here is probably the best of their career. I am a big Pink Floyd fan, and the band is channeling David Gilmour as if he was in the studio with them. I am not saying it is a rip-off, as I honestly believe Gilmour would absolutely love both these tracks. Crystal clear production also helps deliver that sonic soundscape you can just get lost in. When the heavier riffs really kick in that background atmosphere never gets lost, even the little minor accents on the hi-hat are perfectly recorded. This is a masterclass on how to record a feeling, not just the instruments.

In my opinion, this is the best of their career. There is not a weak song on this entire album. There are a few songs on here that could arguably be considered the best songs they have ever written. It really is that good. If you are into Gothic Metal, well you probably already have this album. If, however, you are interested in listening to what this genre has to offer, this is a perfect album to pick up. Only problem with that, however, is that the rest of the genre may end up paling in comparison.
