Five years after the really cool The Fire Is Mine, Seven Kingdoms are back with yet another slab of Euro-centric Power Metal with Decennium, fourth studio album by the Florida group. Vicious tracks like the frenetic and catchy "Stargazer", "The Tale of Deathface Grinny", "Castles in the Snow" and "Kingslayer" all show stellar performances and high quality, but it's "In the Walls" that steals the show: based on the homonym short story by H.P. Lovecraft, the song is one of the best compositions of Seven Kingdoms' career, without a doubt; Sabrina Valentine completely obliterates, dissects and eats the carcass of any other female vocalist of the genre (and several other genres, for that matter) here, in a performance that flirts with vocal perfection in the high notes and with an unmatched attitude. Best Power Metal song of the year, and it's not even close.
Some weaker bits are also present, like "The Faceless Hero" and "Hollow", for instance, but these are not bad songs by any means, just not on par with the first portion of the album. The production here is what you may expect from a Power Metal album, with good dynamic range, decently spaced instruments and special attention to the vocals and riffs, all courtesy of legend Jim Morris, with prodigy Jacob Hansen also delivering a great mastering job.
From Sabrina's incredible voice to the full-bodied riffs and sober songwriting, Decennium is the best Power Metal release of 2017 so far. Fans of bands like Divine Ascension and Triosphere have to check this out, as so do anyone with half a brain. Highly recommended.
