On again, off again, on again Swedish Doom legends Candlemass are back in an "on again" phase with a new singer and a new EP titled Death Thy Lover. Out is singer Robert Lowe, in is former live vocalist Mats Leven, a change that probably has a lot to do with the release of this EP despite a public proclamation that 2012's Psalms of the Dead would be the band's last album. Regardless, Candlemass fans should be happy with these four new songs. My favorite is the title track with its briskly paced verses that give way to a slower tempo for the chorus. Leven handles the vocals well and is quite similar to Lowe in his range and delivery. The other songs are more "typical" doomy Candlemass fare. I find the entirety of Death Thy Lover a little less heavy than I was expecting as Leif Edling's bass is rather subdued. I was hoping for more of a punch to the chest from the bottom end but I'll still take it as no one wants to see a pioneering band like this hang it up while they've still got some good music to share. Hopefully Death Thy Lover is beginning of a fruitful run with Leven at the microphone.
