I guess I couldn't strike gold twice in a row. After a good melodic Death Metal album from The Absence, here's the more generic variety that I've been hiding from for years. To make matters worse, the vocalist uses a metalcore-ish variety of vocals. The album would be much better already without that little detail. Musically, Anterior stick to the established Gothenburg melodic Death Metal sound, much like what was being released every other day just a few years back. A little late to the party, I guess. So there's nothing, absolutely nothing new here, but at least it's competently played. The guitar work is especially good overall, and when they don't go for some cheap riffage that borders on metalcore - thankfully not getting there - then there's some good shredding to be heard here. The drumming is quite good as well, I'd say I like the drumming style better on this one than I did on labelmates The Absence's "Riders of the Plague". I don't know what it is, but there's a little something here that occasionally made me focus solely on the drums and practically ignore everything else. Nothing to get excited about, and the album is almost ruined by the use of metalcore-ish vocals. The band definitely has a lot of potential, but they should think about doing their own thing rather than blending trends and rehashing an overly abused genre without adding anything to it. |
