Black Waves is the third album by this Norwegian band that plays progressive-tinged traditional metal. Singer Tony "Thunder" Johannessen sounds a lot like late '80s-era Dickinson and the fact he was once in a Maiden tribute band called Moonchild (according to Metal Archives) should give you a good starting place for what the album sounds like overall. The playing is solid across the board, and all involved are clearly pros but the songwriting, while fine, is uninspired. There are no big choruses you'll be shouting and the riffs are standard, nothing you'll be humming after Black Waves ends. It is an inoffensive and vanilla record, so if you grab a copy, you probably won't hate it, but you might not remember much about it, either. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
