Lady of Lust and Steel is the debut album from Portland, Oregon's Stainless. They play hard rocking heavy metal with gravelly female lead vocals so, right off the bat, bands like Bitch, Girlschool and Hellion come to mind. Musically, they have similarities with early US metal, but the aforementioned hard rock streak that isn't too far off from AC/DC and Scorpions in places. The guitar sound is rough and raw, without too much polish, so it works well with singer Larissa Cavacece's voice, which might not be the best you've heard, but she more than makes up for any deficiencies with her attitude and charisma. She's really giving it her all on tracks like "Whorefrost" and "Danger in the Night" and the rest of the band does their part with rumbling, galloping riffs and some nice lead work. I wasn't too high on Lady of Lust and Steel the first time I listened to it, but it has grown on me with successive spins to the point where I can easily imagine blasting it from the car stereo while rolling down the road on the way to a show. Good stuff from Stainless that isn't meant to be original, just to rock hard. |
