This is the latest project by Hylgaryss, a multi-instrumentalist who has been doing the one-man-band thing since the '90s, as well as playing on various other projects. I am always glad to see someone carrying the torch of French Black Metal, even if this is far from the harshness of the Les Légions Noires bands. That said, I wish I liked this more than I do. The melodic/atmospheric passages are the best part of this, and the Black Metal sections sound more generic and have less interest. The vocals are mixed and processed into an echoing bellow, and I kind of like it, even as I wish it was not so overproduced. This is an album that tries to conjure up an oppressive mood, but only succeeds in places. |
