Evermore is a Swedish power metal band that, despite my love of the style, slipped under my radar until Mournbraid, their third album, found its way into my review queue. This is turn of the millennium stuff with copious double-kick drums, high, wailing choruses, neoclassical guitars and just a hint of supporting keys. Singer Johan Haraldsson is the right man for the job, as his voice reminds me of Tobias Sammet in both sound and delivery, not to mention the vocal lines and choruses which could easily have found a home on Edguy records like Theater of Salvation or Vain Glory Opera. There are a few tracks that stand out, like "Ravens at the Gate," which has one of the catchier choruses, but most of Mournbraid is standard power metal that any fan of the style will have heard plenty of times before. If you dig Edguy and Evermore countrymen Bloodbound and Hammerfall, you should find Mournbraid right up your alley. Just don't expect any surprises. |
