Here we have Red Asphalt, the eleventh studio album from Exhumed, a band that plays death/grind like it is still 1993. There is something to be said for riffs that are tighter than a coiled spring and gore-obsessed cookie monster grunts, so if you are in the mood for that, Exhumed deliver as they always have. The general theme of this album is automobile and other road accidents, and the title is the same as an infamously graphic driver's education movie many of us here in the U.S. were forced to watch when we were learning to drive (or others like it). It seems like low-hanging fruit for Exhumed and that's my biggest gripe with Red Asphalt; it is very by the numbers with nothing at all to separate it from any other album in this style. It is played well and it achieves exactly what the band set out to do, but the bar was pretty low, and the final product is average at best. I don't hate it but there is nothing on Red Asphalt that inspires me to go back and listen to it once it ends.
