Buried in Black is the debut album from this one-man band out of New Jersey and covers a lot of genres with its blackened, gothic, death/doom sound. There's rasping shouts, guttural growls and clean singing, acoustic, tremolo picked and riffing guitar work and an overall sense of somber heaviness providing the thread that runs through the whole affair. The songs are generally long, with a few shorter cuts, and have enough variety in the songwriting to stay interesting. The song "Ephemerality" has stuck with me the most with its monstrous opening riff and beautiful melodies, but the rest of the album leans into the atmospheric realm and, for me, works better as background music rather than an immersive experience. Pensively beautiful, Buried in Black is a solid debut from Orchid Throne. |
