Divine Spear is the second album of quirky, traditional heavy metal from Finland's Chalice. As on their debut, Chalice builds their songs starting with great riffs, layering a staccato style of singing, old-school synths and a few spoken-word pieces on top to create music that feel familiar in terms of traditional heavy metal but also unlike what their peers are doing in many ways. There is also a doom element in sprawling tracks like "Alioth" and "Empyrean Liturgy," to say nothing of the flute on the latter, that enhances the varied nature of the album. Chalice's music reminds me of Slough Feg mixed with newer bands inspired by '70s occult hard rock like Phantom Spell and Spell. I don't necessarily think it is an improvement on Chalice's debut, but it stands right there with it, so if you liked Trembling Crown or are just in the mood for something different, Divine Spear is an album to seek out.
