Schreigarm is a duo of Ukranian musicians based in Germany that is releasing their second album, Mara Comes and Darkness Shall Reign, via Purity Through Fire. Black metal at the core, the songs incorporate a lot of melody and clean singing along with the harsh rasps and rapid-fire drumming, all with a production that creates a lot of space in which everything can swirl. The mood alternates between menacing, morose, somber, etc., so you could easily slot Mara Comes and Darkness Shall Reign into the "atmospheric" subgenre. The orthodox black metal passages are good, if not great, but some of the songs that bring in outside influences, like the tribal drumming and chanting on "Mara Comes," are quite creepy. I don't find the songwriting as intricate or dense as can often be the case with this kind of music, but the playing and overall sound are solid. There are a lot of bands operating in the "atmospheric," "post-black"—whatever you like to call it—genre, so if that's your thing, give Mara Comes and Darkness Shall Reign a listen and see how it works for you. |
