I think it says something about the intensity of the original wave of Florida Death Metal bands in the '90s that even now, decades later, you can dig and dig and never seem to run out of bands you never heard about, and that so many of them still sound as good as they did back then. Brutality were one of the earliest bands on the scene, forming in 1986 and taking up the Brutality name in '87. Unlike a lot of those classic-era bands, Brutality are still a going concern, with 3/5 of the original lineup and an album as recently as 2016, plus a lot of demo rereleases and such. This is literal old-school Death Metal, recorded when the wave was still cresting at the legendary Morrisound Studios in Tampa. For a debut the songwriting is really polished, with a lot less of the hyperactive clickety-click drums you'd expect and a lot more Euro-styled crunch and riff. The songs have a lot of dynamic and variety, slowing down for more melodic passages and flashing a lot of good riff-writing. But this band doesn't skimp on the heaviness, and despite its age, this still crushes pretty hard. This has a lot more in common with stuff like Asphyx or Demigod than the more usual sounds coming out of Florida at the time, and shows a degree of maturity I didn't expect. Definitely worth checking out if you never have. See below for more reviews and interviews... ↓ |
