Germany's Paradox started out in 1987 with their first album, Product of Imagination, and here we are, nearly 40 years and a dizzying array of musicians (other than main man Charly Steinhauer) later with album number ten, Mysterium. Charly and crew are dialed in after so many years, so there is plenty here to like. The fundamentals of thrash are represented from the speedy and chunky guitars to the squealing solos and melodic songwriting. Standouts include "Pile of Shame," which uses a slower tempo to great effect and should inspire lots of fist pumping, and "Those Who Resist," with a title that doesn't include me, as I get swept along by the bulldozing bass drums every time the song comes on. There are some weaker tracks, like the title cut, which is dull, but otherwise, Mysterium is another excellent thrash record from Paradox that should easily please fans, especially those of '80s thrash.
