Third album for this band from Louisiana, who are waving high that mid-aughts prog sound in the vein of Communic, Scariot, or even Anubis Gate. This is a massive album, and if this band has a failing, it's that they are all over the place, with long songs that are not very coherent, even if they all contain some really good parts. The clean vocals are overprocessed, but they are solid even so, but the harsh vocals are yappy and unpleasant and are used way too much. You can get caught up in this music as it shifts from mode to mode, from crunching and heavy to smooth and melodic, trading off polyrhythmic passages with smooth piano melodies and agile leads, but then it's been ten minutes and there has been a lot of nice music but no song, and nothing about it will stick around afterward. A really good prog band who would be better if they reined it in a little, or a lot. |
