I heard two bars of the first track and was like "wait, is this a Finnish band?" and I was right on the money. This is very much in the vein of classic Scandinavian Melodic Death Metal of that archetypal Finnish sound like Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Amorphis, Sentenced—all the classic sounds are here. The hooky, accessible riffs, the melancholy leads, the staccato playing trading off with the moodier passages and the vocals that are pretty faceless and don't have a lot of identity. This doesn't have the nimble playing and killer hooks like Children of Bodom, nor does it have the epic feel and melodic sense of Eternal Tears of Sorrow or Sentenced. It's imitation, not breaking any new ground and not really measuring up to its influences. But really, so few bands are doing this kind of thing anymore that I find myself kind of liking it anyway. |
