This is a one-man avant-garde Black Metal project spun off from the even more avant-garde Les Chants du Hasard—a project that has tried to fuse Black Metal with 19th-century opera. This is a much more traditional Black Metal sounding work, though it is still off the beaten path. The heart of this is long compositions filled with drawn-out, harsh riffing and agonal vocals washed through so many effects you can't possibly understand them. I hear influence from bands like Ruins of Beverast, Nightbringer, or Blut Aus Nord. I salute that this is a project dedicated to doing something different, but just because something is unusual doesn't mean it's inherently interesting. Despite the seriousness of intent, a lot of this is just kind of repetitive, grinding facelessness that doesn't have anything to really grab onto. It's harsh, it's cold, but it doesn't have great songwriting to make it hang together. |
