Hard to believe this is the 8th album for Texas band Krigsgrav, who have had a very under-the-radar career, shifting from sound to sound with each release and never seeming to sit still. The one constant has been the highly melodic and quality nature of the guitar work, especially since Cody Daniels joined the band in 2019. This is definitely swimming much more in that Death/Black mixture than the last album did, and it sounds a lot more like Melodic Death Metal for that, reminding me a bit of Dark Tranquility or Demonoid (if anyone remembers Demonoid) rather than the more expansive, pagan sounds I heard from them on Fires in the Fall. I like this, and the melodic leads are stellar, but the album has a messier, all-over-the-place kind of feel to it that keeps it from really hitting, as it can't seem to settle on a solid sound. No matter how good some of the parts are, the whole doesn't gel.
