Second album from Thaumaturgy, whose lone member hails from the evil wastelands of Kansas in the United States. Pestilential Hymns has the unholy howling and savage guitars you expect from black/death, but I find the songwriting is dull. It goes back and forth between monotonous sawing guitars and plodding breakdowns and while there are keys, they don't often get the opportunity to do their creepy atmospheric thing. I don't hate Pestilential Hymns but neither do I love it, as it is just another release in a vast sea of black/death metal. |
