Kriegsgötter MMXXV is a reissue/update of Mystic Circle's Kriegsgötter II EP, a collection of covers and non-album tracks from 2000. This new version includes additional covers that were previously difficult to obtain. There are some tracks on here that I like, such as the cover of Bathory's "One Rode to Asa Bay," where the harsh vocals really enhance the atmosphere, and the version of Possessed's "Death Metal," which doesn't stray from the original too much but is still an absolute crusher. The original track "Die Götter der Urväter" is another cool song in the Bathory mold. Other tracks don't work so well. "Circle of the Tyrants" (Celtic Frost) sticks close to the original but is hobbled by a much weaker sound than the other songs, and "Afraid to Shoot Strangers" (Iron Maiden) is just noise until the solo, which is very Maidenesque but that only succeeds in making the song disjointed. Mystic Circle fans should eat this up (if they don't already own all the tracks on other releases), but as a casual Mystic Circle fan, there are only a couple songs I feel are worth having, so decide which camp you are in before you plunk down any money for Kriegsgötter MMXXV.
