Debut album for this Finnish band who are at least doing something different with their Death Metal assault, even if it doesn't always work. This is heavy, sometimes sludgy stuff with rather complex compositions that are not the usual Death Metal blast and riff approach. There's a much more technical aesthetic without technical playing, if you get what I mean. This has a slower groove, with a very Euro Death Metal crunch and mood. These songs tend to be long—some of them over 9 minutes—but I don't think those really needed to be as long as they are. The riffs are solid fistfuls of pummeling in the classic Entombed/Dismember style, and I admire the ambition of the songwriting to do something besides the usual. If this band's reach exceeds their grasp, they still get points for reaching. |
