Blood Sabbath is the debut from Canada's Serpent Corpse and, while most readers of my reviews here at The Metal Crypt probably know by now, death metal is not typically a genre I enjoy as much as some of the others, but this album flat-out rules. I love the slow, evil riffs on cuts like "Evil Eye," which can trace their history back to early Slayer, or the killer groove on "Nemesis." The vocals are harsh but understandable, another plus in my book, and the guitar tone is fantastic. The music is simple and straightforward, and I mean that in the most flattering way, as Serpent Corpse don't bother with the overly technical songwriting or the willfully jagged playing that turns me off about a lot of death metal. Blood Sabbath is overflowing with rumbling, steamrolling riffs and headbanging breakdowns that will make even the meekest fan want to wade into the pit. A simply excellent debut from Serpent Corpse. |
