Review

There have been few bands in the history of hard rock and heavy metal that have been able to release essentially the same album over and over and have each one be embraced by fans. The ones that jump to mind are AC/DC, Motörhead and former Accept lead singer Udo Dirkschneider’s solo band U.D.O. Touchdown is the eighteenth studio album for Dirkschneider and crew since he went out on his own and when I say, "if you’ve heard any of their previous albums, especially the last five or six, you’ve heard this one," I mean it in the most flattering way possible. Dirkschneider’s distinctive, gravelly shout sounds as good as did back in 1981 and the guys surrounding him, including son Sven Dirkschneider on drums and former Accept bassist Peter Baltes, are all pros. The whole album is full of chugging, traditional metal anthems that are foot-tapping, air guitar soloing fun fests. Personally, I like the songs that sound the most like old Accept, such as "Forever Free" and "Fight for the Right," but there aren’t any bad ones and no ballads to slow things down, just riff after riff of metallic might. It isn’t new but, as I said at the outset, that’s a good thing as U.D.O. is as consistently headbanging as you are going to find.
