I was looking forward to this new album, but unfortunately it turned out to be a little too "modern" for my taste, not to mention a few questionable choices of vocal styles. There are some good songs here, don’t get me wrong, and when they stick to what they do best then it’s quite enjoyable death metal with a lot of melody—I don’t want to call it "melodic death metal" as it doesn’t fit with the subgenre commonly associated with that name. It’s just straight-out death metal that happens to be more melodic. Most of the vocals are growls of a more modern style and they’re OK except for the more screamy passages that remind me more of what you could hear in nu-metal, but there are also some clean female vocals and later clean male vocals that really sound out of place and completely ruin the flow for me. Kudos to them for trying something new (well, maybe it’s not—I haven’t heard all their stuff), but this is not an album I’ll be going back to. If you like your death metal more modern-sounding, then this might be worth checking out. |
