This is a bit different as far as split albums go as Yiannis K. of Serpent Noir wrote the lyrics for both bands since The Red Dragon was the thematic of the album. Serpent Noir contributed four tracks and Sargeist, three. We tend to look for a "winner" on splits, but here I'd be hard-pressed to pick a favourite. Both bands deliver solid black metal that ranges from sharp and straightforward to more atmospheric and haunting. The overall album, despite the presence of two bands, flows pretty well and is quite cohesive. You'll definitely notice when Sargeist take over the hostilities, but both bands have done a good job of writing songs that mesh very well with what the other band is doing. Things tend to get quite melodic, music-wise, at times, but the vocals are so out of this world that they give a really raw edge to those more... "accessible" (ah!) songs. Splits are often just a bunch of songs contributed by two or more bands and slapped together on a disc, but here Serpent Noir and Sargeist have gone further and created something that works well altogether. |
