It's kind of an open secret that The Funeral Orchestra is really Runemagick, maybe with some lineup variations—as they don't identify themselves it's hard to say. But the prime instigator is Nicklas Rudolfsson, and while Runemagick has always leaned on the "Death" side of the "Doom/Death" equation, TFO exists to come down on the "Doom" side. The band, or project, has released a number of splits and singles over the seventeen years since their last full-length album, but now, of course, Nicklas is back with not one, but two full albums. If you have heard Runemagick, then you just have to imagine them like 40% more Doom and you got it. This is heavy and has some good Doom riffs, but it largely does not have the atmosphere I want from really first-rate Funeral Doom. Mostly TFO are happy to be slow and heavy, and sometimes that's enough, but after such a long time I suppose I was hoping for more. |
