Hailing from India, Aempyrean offer some barebones blackened death that won't shake up the genre but sure is cool while it's on. The vocalist spits out the lyrics, mixing black metal rasps with death growls and he's pretty good at both styles and really helps bring out the nastiness of the music, contributing to a malevolent atmosphere that surrounds the entire recording. There's also a mid-80s thrash vibe here and there that makes a few passages a bit catchier than the rest and it's easy to think of the German school and also early Metallica on some of the riffs. Throw in some early U.S. death metal influences for seasoning, and things get even more fun. Fireborn is not refined in the least, sounding almost like demo material at times, but the band's attitude makes it through the speakers and makes up for it. A band to watch. |
