Their name sounds more like a description of my room growing up than a Death/Thrash Metal band, but Turkey's Vortex of Clutter is no joke. Serious Thrash Metal with Death vocals defines their debut album, Source of Sickness. Not what I would call "technical," Source of Sickness sounds more like classic Death and Celtic Frost, with their harsh, growling vocals, mixed with the newer Thrash Metal riffs of Helstar or Testament. The music is harsh and fast, but never sacrifices melody. Singer Gökhan Koç has a rather generic voice, neither adding to nor hindering the songs. Guitarist Zafer Tunaboylu (lead) and Güne? Kaya (rhythm) carry the show. There aren't any real standout tracks yet neither are there any weak spots. Source of Sickness may be derivative but it is exceptionally played, making its lack of originality a minor issue. I'm not the biggest fan of Death vocals, but this is the kind of crossover Thrash I can get into. |
