Alarum is a progressive metal fusion band from Australia and I was simply blown away by the talent level in this band. They are able to go from hardcore thrash riffs to an almost jazz inspired riff effortlessly and having it sound like it all belongs is a real testament to their songwriting abilities. The musicianship ability is just over the top from the excellent guitar work with great riffs and brilliant leads to the incredible drum work. If I really had to pinpoint the sound of this to explain the sound I would have to go with Cynic. I know to some of you this may be a little hard to believe since Cynic's album "Focus" has become a major underground classic but all I can say is listen to this for yourself and you will see that the comparison is not unfounded. The promo I received also has two new songs as well as the "Fluid Motion" demo, which was released in 1998. The two new songs are even more technically progressive than the demo and really showcases the excellent songwriting ability of this band. They are currently in pre-production for a new album and if the new one is as incredible as this demo I can't imagine how any label wouldn't be in a line around the corner to get a chance to sign these guys. Simply put this is some excellent music.
Overall if you like bands like Cynic, Atheist or Anacrusis this will be a well worth checking out. For more information on the band just check out www.geocities.com/alarum1 you will be glad you did... :)
