This is not a new album per se but rather an unreleased album from 1991 or so, with some former band members joining to rework and complete it. With that in mind, I'd have expected some classic old-school death metal to come out of the speakers. While there's some of that, Hymns of Misanthropy sounds more experimental, with sounds and melodies that I wouldn't normally expect in the genre. That is not a bad thing, as this sounds pretty good and definitely different from the typical death metal that's been flooding the release channels in the past several years. I'm reminded of some progressive death metal bands that do weird things without sounding like they're just wanking. All of this is wrapped in a mysterious, dark, borderline chilling atmosphere. Worth checking out if you're looking for something different. See below for more reviews and interviews... ↓ |
