Eternal Rising is the debut from Italy's Xeneris, a relatively new entity on the metal scene having formed in 2022. Female-fronted, European symphonic/power metal is the genre Xeneris have based their performances, songwriting, etc. on, and it was a good choice indeed. Singer Marianna Iacona (billed as Maryan on the album) has a strong, clear voice and just the right balance of operatic range and metal sensibilities. She drives songs like "Barbarossa" and the title track, and really brings home "Pandora's Box" with a fantastic hook on the chorus. The rest of the band are no slouches (you can't be if you're going to play symphonic metal) and I like that the songwriting avoids a lot of the gothic vibe that female-fronted bands tend to adopt. Promising debut from this band, and fans of Xandria and Ancient Bards should be checking out Eternal Rising sooner rather than later. |
