I have been hoping for a long time that Krieg would make a good album. This is a band with some flashes of promise in their 25-year career, but they are more known for their nihilistic attitude than for the consistency of their music. I think this is actually the best album they have done in a long time, with solid production and much better riffs. Imperial's vocals are still not anything special, but they are not mixed so far forward, so they blend in well. If Krieg have a failing this time out, it's that most of these songs sound a lot alike, are at a similar mid-pace, and they also tend to go on a bit too long. All the good bits are in the first third of the tracks, and after that they just kind of keep going without doing anything really interesting. If you cut all these songs by a fourth, they would be a lot tighter and more focused. Still, a Krieg album that is about making actual Black Metal is welcome to hear.
