Another blast of Hellhammer worship from this Portuguese band. This is better written and better recorded than their debut, while still maintaining that essential underground vibe you need if you are trying to conjure Apocalyptic Raids and Morbid Tales at the same time. The band's sense of timing and atmosphere have improved, and these songs are more deliberately done, with real thought put into replicating the arcane, dark mood of classic masterworks made by guys who weren't trying to make classics. Artlessness is the most difficult art, and Martelo Negro don't quite manage it, but what they do manage is a heavy, riffy album that's unpretentious fun. |
