Scythian burst onto the UK scene with To Those Who Stand Against Us in 2009, and then we had to wait for them to get another album recorded. With the success of that disc, I was worried they might have gone soft, but this is a more than worth follow-up. Scythian are a band who dig right down into the primal crust of proto-thrash like Sodom or Celtic Frost. They have big, barbaric riffs and plenty of aggression as well as a hooky sense of melody. They have a knack for mixing heaviness with melodic riffs to produce songs of iron age fury that rip and tear through your speakers. Desaster on their good albums were rarely as good as this. Hubris in Excelsis is a pounding, war-horned exercise in thrashing savagery. This album is not quiiite as rage-spewing and violent as their debut, but it is a killer ride nonetheless. |
