Evocation is a solid band, with four solid albums of Swedish Death Metal under its belt. Now, less than a year removed from Illusions of Grandeur, the Swedes are back with Excised and Anatomised, an EP of five cover tracks. I'm all for bands recording covers, as it's often interesting to hear one band interpret another. However, all of the covers on this EP are of Death Metal songs, and they are all played completely straight. Evocation made no effort to add its own touch to these tracks, begging the question of "what was the point?"
Outside of the Napalm Death throwaway (the four second "You Suffer"), these are all top-notch songs, so the EP is an enjoyable listen. But even for Evocation fans, if you already have the original tracks, there's absolutely no reason to waste your time with this. |
