Mael Mordha is an Irish band who has mixed Celtic laments with traditional Doom to create their own breed of Doom Metal. This is actually their second album, but their first was through Karmageddon, who kindly made sure no one ever got to buy it. Into the breach steps the German label Grau to ensure that this fine band does not go unheard any longer. There is an obvious similarity to Ireland's other great band Primordial, but overall Mael Mordha have their own sound. Big, sweeping riffs that mix Doom with an Epic Black Metal feel a la Graveland or Wyrd highlighted by acoustic or piano interludes, topped off by raw but melodic vocals. I would pick out favorites, but really there are no bad tracks on here, and the album has a very unified sound that gives it more punch. Mael Mordha are hard to describe, yet impossible to miss once you've heard them. Powerful, intense, and epic, this is an album to enjoy over and over. There are not many bands from Ireland, but they all seem to be great. Highly recommended. |
