Sweden's Bloodbound has been steadily moving away from crunchy, muscular Heavy/Power Metal and in a more melodic and "happy," for lack of a better word, direction since the departure of Urban Breed after Tabula Rasa. Their latest release, 2017's War of Dragons, is, as the name would imply, full of fantasy-based lyrics and songwriting in line with the Italian masters of this style. Double-kick drums are liberally used throughout the album along with some excellent neoclassical guitar work. The vocal lines are supremely hooky and feature the type of choruses that stick in your head after only a listen or two. This kind of Metal isn't for everyone but if a cross between Sabaton ("Stand and Fight") and Edguy ("King of Swords") over a foundation of Ancient Bards/early Rhapsody sounds good to you, War of Dragons won't be groundbreaking but you'll hardly notice as you sing along. |
