When I reviewed The Murder of My Sweet’s 2012 album Bye Bye Lullaby I noted the focus was on "Gothic" and not "Metal" and that’s even more true of 2015’s Beth Out of Hell. On this album the Swedish band gives us an hour and ten minutes of crystalline pop-Metal candy. Huge orchestral arrangements drown the guitars to mere afterthoughts and the vocal lines are straight out of the Top 40. It is like listening to Nightwish’s Imaginaerium though less painful. The Murder of My Sweet has moved from AFM Records to Frontiers Records which dovetails with their move to a more mainstream sound. This band plays well but they are rapidly moving away from anything remotely Metal so there’s no need to bother with Beth Out of Hell. Not when there’s better stuff to be had from Xandria, Delain, Epica, etc. |
