Power Metal super-group Unisonic is back with a new album planned for the summer of 2014 and, in anticipation, has released the EP For the Kingdom. I loved the band's debut, Unisonic, so I greet any new music with enthusiasm.
What do you get on For the Kingdom? One track from the forthcoming album ("For the Kingdom"), one track exclusive to the EP ("You Come Undone") and four live songs, from the 2012 Masters of Rock Festival, that all originally appeared on Unisonic. If "For the Kingdom" is any indication, the new album will be faster and heavier than the debut. This is a speedy, double-kick anthem in every sense of the word. Michael Kiske again shows why he's one of the best Power Metal vocalists in the world as his voice soars on the chorus. "You Come Undone" is still up-tempo, but a little slower and has more of a "rock" vibe. It reminds me of some of the bonus tracks Kiske did with Edguy. The four live tracks sound great, though you've likely heard them before as they all appeared on the debut.
For the Kingdom is a nice little teaser for Unisonic's second album and shows that they going to give us more of what made the debut such a fun record. Is it worth picking up? That's hard to say, but the one song that you haven't heard or won't get with the full album is good, but not great, so factor that into your buying decision. As for the forthcoming album; at this point, I'm all in.
